If you are looking to level up your driving career or if you’re a transport manager trying to keep your fleet compliant, you’ve probably heard the term “ADR” tossed around quite a bit. It’s one of those qualifications that sounds complicated, and let’s be honest, the manual is pretty thick, but it is absolutely essential for anyone handling “dangerous goods.”
At Open Road Training Ltd, we don’t just teach you how to pass the test; we help you understand the “why” behind the rules. Whether you are starting from scratch or just need to refresh your existing card, we have a range of adr courses designed to fit your schedule.
1. What Exactly is ADR Training?
Before we dive into the different course types, let’s clear up the jargon. ADR officially stands for Accord Dangéreux par Route. In plain English, it’s the European agreement concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods by road.
1.1 Why do you need it?
If you are carrying dangerous goods in packages or tanks above a certain threshold (the “load limit”), the law says you must hold a valid ADR driver training certificate. This isn’t just a “nice to have”, it’s a legal requirement.
Regulation Check: “Drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods shall hold a certificate issued by the competent authority stating that they have participated in a training course and passed an examination on the particular requirements that have to be met during carriage of dangerous goods.”
This means that if you get caught without the right card for the load you’re hauling, both you and your employer are in for a world of pain with the DVSA.

2. The Full Initial ADR Training Course (5 Days)
If you have never held an ADR card before, or if your previous card has already expired, the Full Initial ADR Training is where you need to start. This is a comprehensive 5-day program that covers almost everything you’ll need to get on the road with hazardous materials.
2.1 What’s included in the 5-day block?
Our core initial course is designed to be as efficient as possible. It covers:
- The Core Module: The basic safety principles for all dangerous goods.
- Packages: How to handle goods in drums, sacks, and boxes.
- Tanks: Specific training for those driving tankers or tank containers.
- Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9: These cover the vast majority of goods moved in the UK.
2.2 Breaking down the Classes
We cover the following “Classes” in our standard 5-day course:
- Class 2: Gases
- Class 3: Flammable liquids (The big one, petrol, diesel, etc.).
- Class 4: Flammable solids.
- Class 5: Oxidising substances and organic peroxides.
- Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances.
- Class 8: Corrosives (Acids and alkalis).
- Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances (Think asbestos or lithium batteries).
What’s missing? You’ll notice we don’t include Class 1 (Explosives) or Class 7 (Radioactive) in the standard 5-day block. These require specialist training, though we do offer Class 1 as an add-on (more on that later!).
You can find our current adr courses and booking options on our website.
3. ADR Refresher Courses (3 Days)
Time flies when you’re on the road. Your ADR certificate is valid for five years, but you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to renew it.
3.1 When should you take a refresher?
You must complete your refresher training and pass the exams before the expiry date shown on your current ADR card. We usually recommend starting this process at least 6 to 12 months before the card expires. Don’t shoot the messenger, but if you let it expire by even one day, you have to do the full 5-day initial course all over again.
3.2 The Refresher advantage
Our refresher course covers the same ground as the initial (Packages, Tanks, and Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9) but is condensed into just 3 days. It’s a faster, more focused way to ensure you stay compliant without taking too much time off work.

4. Job-Specific & Tailored ADR Courses
We know that not every driver needs the full “all classes” treatment. If you are working for a company that only moves one specific type of product, why spend five days studying things you’ll never touch?
4.1 Custom durations (2-3 Days)
We offer job-specific courses that can be completed in as little as 2 to 3 days. For example:
- Fuel Tanker Drivers: You might only need Core, Tanks, and Class 3.
- Medical Couriers: You might focus on Class 6 (Infectious substances).
If you’re unsure which specific classes you need for a new role, it’s always best to check with your employer or give us a shout. This has been a hot subject recently, as many drivers are moving into specialised roles like those found at adr driver jobs Glasgow Tradebe.
5. Specialist Training: Class 1 Explosives
For those moving high-security or high-risk loads, the standard ADR classes aren’t enough. Moving fireworks, ammunition, or industrial explosives requires Class 1 Explosives training.
5.1 Adding Class 1 to your ADR
If you already have a valid ADR card or are currently taking your initial course, we can add a Class 1 Explosive module. This typically requires one additional day of training and a specific exam. It’s a niche market, but it’s a great way to make yourself more valuable to specialist hauliers.
Check out our upcoming ADR course dates to see when the next Explosives module is running.

6. ADR Awareness Training
Not everyone in a transport company needs to hold an ADR card. But, under the regulations, anyone involved in the transport of dangerous goods must receive some form of training. This includes:
- Warehouse staff.
- Loaders and unloaders.
- Office staff and planners.
- Van drivers carrying “Limited Quantities.”
ADR awareness training is a shorter, non-exam-based course that ensures your entire team knows how to identify dangerous goods, what the labels mean, and what to do in an emergency. It’s a vital part of your health and safety compliance.
7. Understanding ADR Course Prices and Value
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: adr course prices.
We know that training is an investment of both time and money. While prices can vary based on the number of classes and modules you choose, you have to look at the “cost of non-compliance.” A single fine for an incorrectly documented hazardous load can cost a company thousands of pounds, far more than the cost of a training course.
For drivers, having an ADR card usually opens doors to higher-paying roles. Because it is a specialist skill, ADR drivers are often in higher demand and command better hourly rates.

9. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do ADR courses count towards my Driver CPC hours?
A: Yes! Most ADR courses can be registered for Driver CPC hours (usually 7 hours per day of training), which means you can kill two birds with one stone.
Q: How long does the ADR card take to arrive?
A: Once you pass your exams, Qualifications Scotland processes the results and DVSA issues the card. It usually lands on your doorstep within a week.
Q: Can I drive dangerous goods as soon as I pass the exam?
A: No. You must wait until you have the physical card in your hand before you can legally drive a vehicle requiring ADR.
